About Freaking Ding Bat

Freaking Ding Bat makes Halloween-inspired bat art in Long Beach, California: paintings, hand-cut prints on wood, stickers and custom murals, all in a style the studio calls “Neon Goth”: bright, horror-loving bat art in the lowbrow and pop-surrealist tradition of comic books, toys and street art.

“Freaking Ding Bat isn’t necessarily one person. It’s a group of people. We paint bats, we draw bats, and we make bat products. We paint bat murals.”

How it started

“I got my start doing illegal street art. I was going out at night and putting up little characters I had drawn. Because I was always going out at night I landed on this little bat character.”

— Freaking Ding Bat, CanvasRebel, 2024

When people on Reddit started asking who was leaving the bats around the city, and one wrote “I wish I could have one of these in my home,” the first handful of wooden bats sold out right away.

“I started out not knowing how to draw at all.”

Every night meant an hour of drawing on a giant roll of white paper, then another hour studying other artists, drawing techniques and art history.

Why “Neon Goth”

“The whole “make everything black” vibe is exhausted when it comes to goth, Halloween, or horror movies.”

— Freaking Ding Bat, Bold Journey, 2023

The look came from a list of loves: “Sofubi toys, comic book illustrations, Halloween, bright colors, horror movies, color gradients, synth wave, and cyberpunk music.” The bat became the one character that ties them together.

“The long-term goal is to partner with a bat rescue so that when you buy a piece of Freaking Ding Bat art, you’re also adopting a bat and contributing to bat wildlife rehabilitation or conservation.”
